Aerial photographer George Steinmetz documents the impact of humans on the planet and the solutions we have come up with to try to save it in a collection of images for his book “Human Planet.”

1️⃣ In 2017, Steinmetz photographed glaciologists in Greenland using dye to track flows of water into crevasses. This movement of surface water may increase the rate at which ice slides into the sea and melts.

2️⃣ Rice fields around Nijhum Dwip, in southern Bangladesh, are prone to flooding, which is becoming more frequent because of climate change.

3️⃣Smoke surrounds trees in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. In 2019, Brazilian government data showed that the rate of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest had risen to its highest level in 11 years.

4️⃣An egg farm in Mato Grosso State, Brazil, which was once part of Brazil's Cerrado, is being cleared at an alarming rate to make way for cattle ranches and to grow soy, which is either exported or used to feed livestock.

5️⃣Dutch company Koppert Cress has created these cress-growing greenhouses in the Netherlands, saying that by storing excess heat and cold from its greenhouses, it can reduce CO2 emissions.

6️⃣ The Golmud Solar Park, in Qinghai province, northwestern China. The country has pledged to invest 2.5 trillion yuan ($357 billion) in renewable power generation — solar, wind, hydro and nuclear — from 2017 to 2020.

Don't be fooled by corporate greenwashing. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! You see it in your feeds every day: Big corps that have exploited the planet for years seem to turn over a new leaf, announcing a new (always vague) sustainability initiative or product that promises that things are different now! But it's not only the big guys. Greenwashing is an effective marketing tool that brands use to their advantage to get a footing in the sustainability market. Next time @burgerking releases a limited-time only, plant-based patty or @hm markets their new sustainable dress, look a little closer. What else are they selling? Are their workers paid a livable wage? What does "all-natural" even mean anyway?! Celebrate wins, but also remember sustainable fast food and fast fashion don’t exist, period. Hold them accountable and support brands that align with your values!⠀

A literal mountain of garbage that was declared a public disaster is now a community garden blossoming with life! 17,000 people lived here in Medellín's Moravia neighborhood as it grew into a massive garbage dump between 1977 and 1984. The trash quickly piled up as the population increased, a result of Colombia's civil war that forced many to flee their homes and build makeshift housing here. Fast forward to today, and the area has been completely transformed into the largest garden in Medellín with more than 50,000 plants! 70% of the dump has been converted so far thanks to a series of gardening projects employing residents. This is how you lift up the community and help the environment at the same time!

🚨Locals in Mauritius are struggling to contain the environmental damage of leaking oil from a Japanese-owned ship which run aground on a coral reef off the island’s coast.

Whilst 1,000 tonnes of fuel has already seeped into the ocean, a further 2,500 tones remains onboard. Experts are worried that as the ship begins to crack it could could unleash a spill that would be catastrophic for the fragile coastal ecosystem upon which Mauritius, and its economy, relies.

Designs for the world's largest underwater research station and habitat have been unveiled by aquanaut Fabien Cousteau and Industrial designer Yves Béhar. The 4,000-square-foot modular lab, named Fabien Cousteau's Proteus, will sit 60 feet under water off the coast of Curaçao, a Carribean island. The station will help scientists and researchers studying the effects of climate change on the ocean, new marine life and searching for medicinal breakthroughs. Powered by wind and solar energy, and ocean thermal energy conversion, the structure will also feature the first underwater greenhouse for growing food, as well as a video production facility.
